Saint Michaels
St. Michaels is an interesting mix between tourist/second home location given its access to the Chesapeake Bay and proximity to Baltimore and D.C. It is a close-knit community with just over 1,000 year round residents and with a rich history.
The town survived the War of 1812 and became known as “The Town That Fooled the British” by avoiding destruction via cannon through proactive measures.
St. Michaels has also shaped parts of the seafood industry. As a means of marketing crabmeat, Frederick, the owner of Coulbourne and Jewett in Saint Michael’s, created a five-level, crab grading system which is still used by the industry today. Additionally, it has also benefited greatly from the oyster industry, which utilized several innovative canoes (known as skipjacks) to dredge oysters. Nine of these canoes are currently registered in the National Register of Historic Places.
